In this article Ben Tomas talks about using the Repoussé tool in Photoshop to add 3D to 2D. His picture of a man running through glass is very cool and impressive to look at. He uses a background consists of half black half dark red. The man is in the middle but what is the main focus of this picture is the flying glass. It seems to come out at you, in front of the man and off in to the distance. The glass goes right into your face. He also has links to a walk-through of how to do this effect. I might have to check it out.
